UDS History

1980 Brian Dontje left IBM to found United Data Systems, Inc. with programming available for the IBM System 23. The original systems had 2.4 MB of on line storage and a 32 K processor. Later system would grow to up to two users and 30 MB of hard disk storage.

1984 IBM introduces the PC and cancels production of the IBM System 23. United Data Systems, Inc. is forced to end business and Brian Dontje buys the software from the company and starts a company called UDS.

1985 Brian Begins writing software for the PC XT. With 10 MB of hard disk space the PC begins to take over the personal computer market. UDS now consists of one person and he begins the process of converting the base of System 23 Software to the PC using the MS DOS operating system and a newly released programming language for the PC. Brian's existing green industry customers are good to him and convert to the revolutionary Personal Computer with him. and a newly released programming language for the PC.

1987 After two years of programming and bringing on in new applications for the green industry UDS finally hires a part time employee to assist Brian. Jeff Wolters joins UDS as a part time programmer.

1988 The final remnants of the System 23 code are finally converted to the PC. The PC which has now gone multiple user and UDS supports the growing number of users by beginning network support. UDS is still selling hardware to go with its software.

1993 UDS continues to grow and is forced to move out of Brian's Garage. Windows programming is looming on the horizon and UDS supports it customers by planning to conversion to a totally new platform written on a new operating system with a totally new programming language.

1994 UDS becomes officially UDS Green Industry Software, Inc. Brian and Jeff become partners in the continuing effort to develop perfect green industry accounting software.

1995 UDS releases it first Windows products. Due to reliability issues of the Windows operating system official release of UDS Windows products is delayed. Windows '95 is introduced late in the year.

1996 Windows '95 if finally stable enough with Windows 3.11 and Windows 95 to be used in a business environment so the development effort is started again.

1997 More Windows products are released and the conversion of existing customers is started. UDS limits its customer base to the Green Industry and only rewrites the green industry accounting software portion of the accumulated UDS applications. The new version is based on the design of the original software but enhancements are continually made.

1998 UDS becomes entirely Windows programming based with the release and implementation on Windows NT. NT is clearly superior to any previous version of Windows. UDS converts the remainder of PC customers to Windows. Some of these customers have been with UDS since 1980 and they have migrated through three operating systems.

2000 The UDS DOS program finally meets its end all green industry customers have moved to Windows.

2001 UDS expands ActiveApplications into a larger size green industry company with the SQL version. UDS Announces ActiveApplications - SQL Version.

2001 UDS begins process of converting support processes and development thinking to the Internet.

2002 Version 6 of ActiveApplications is released. 

2003 Version 7 of ActiveApplications SQL and Standard is announced.

2004 Release 7 of ActiveApplications Standard and SQL Versions are finally available.

2006 Release 8 of ActiveApplications Standard and SQL Versions are released. Future developments will first be made in SQL and the program functions will begin to diverge.

2007 Release 9 of ActiveApplications Standard and SQL Version are released. This is the first version of ActiveApplications that was first developed in the SQL version then converted to Standard. Standard version programming begins to diverge from SQL. They are no longer the same in function. Development effort will be emphasized in the SQL version.

2007 UDS goes On-Line. An easy to use and maintain store was added to ActiveApplications. Now your company can put a store on line. The UDS E-Store is announced. Availability in January 2008. Now ActiveApplications spans from the back room to Point of Sale all the way to the Internet with the same program base.

2008 www.aatags.com is released. UDS provides tag and label printing through the Internet. TAGmaker moves to the Internet with new services and capabilities.

2008 All UDS web sites are redesigned and ready for business. I hope you like the new looks.

2009 To be determined

2010 After 30 years of Green Industry Software Brian Dontje announces a reduction of personal activity and transfer of power to an as of yet unknown identity. ActiveApplications will continue as the platform of choice for the green industry but "30 years is long enough" is about all Brian had to say. After the transition of management Brian is going to get serious about fishing.
